20th July, 2022 - Llanon to Aberystwyth

This was another walk which we had planned last year and only just felt fit enough to attempt! We walked into Aberystwyth from Borth with our amazing granddaughter, Abigail last summer and had said then that we would walk together again into Aber from the south. At last today was the day!

We parked in Aber and found our cab from Cambrian Taxis waiting for us by the station ready to take us to Llanon for the start. As usual it seemed a long way back! The cab owner was a lovely lady chatting about the problems with Uber and so on and about her son who does lots of fundraising. As you will see on just giving, she kindly gave us £20 towards our total. What a star!

Here we were all ready to get going!

We headed down to  the coast passing the church and the old fishermen cottages on Llansanffraid and could clearly see the walk was in two halves: the first half flat and by the sea, the second half up on those hills!! This had been one of my favourite walks of the whole coastal path, would it be today?

Once again we passed the limekilns right by the coast for easy access by boat. They are still very impressive (though maybe less so for Abigail!)

We had a good walk along the stony beach at Llanrhystud where we had to approach the road as we weren't allowed through the caravan park at Morfa Farm or Pengarreg so off we set up on to those hills. We could still see the little church back at Llansanffraid and could for quite a distance more!
It's always so fascinating to gaze back at where we set off!

I did remember why I'd loved this walk. It somehow seems so far from civilisation with just breathtaking views when in fact the A470 is never very far away.

I'd told Abigail that the mast wasn't very far out of Aber and I did think that was right but even so it seemed to take a long time to reach it! I just couldn't get it to fit in Abigail's fingers!

The path is very steep up and down, probably steeper than I remembered!! We had to go around one of two properties that are still being renovated, but growing in the process. And the circumnavigation over rough ground was a bit annoying as it was with another caravan park where Abigail rolled downhill to save her feet, even though it was then another steep climb back up! And it was getting warmer now. The sun was appearing! And we began to catch sight of Aber peeping round the headlands.

It was in a way reassuring to see even our young granddaughter was finding the going tough!

And we even did some sheep rounding up though some of them took the least safe route towards the sea!

Finally there was Aber all stretched out before us and mighty fine it looked too. Although it was warm and sunny now, it was also a bit breezy as we started the descent. The path down here on to south beach is really extremely steep and by now my legs were feeling quite weak and wobbly so Abigail had a long wait for us to reach the bottom of the cliff and the final walk on flat ground once more!

Although it still seemed a long way back to the car, we'd done it!!! 12 and a half more miles along the way. We'll make that 500 sooner or later!!!! Thank you, Abigail!
