20th June, 2022 - Ceibwr Bay to Newport

We had chosen to stay in Nevern so we could walk this stretch of the Pembroke coast path and this route like yesterday's, were shortened versions of those we had walked 8 years ago. having enjoyed a lovely evening and a good sleep, we returned to Newport to leave a car and all went back to Ceibwr Bay to set off.

As you see, it was a glorious day! We watched the waves crashing on the rocks covered in thrift now going to seed and with Cemaes Head in the back ground.

There was Cemaes Head somewhere we hoped to reach tomorrow maybe!

The coastline is just so magnificent and we once again tried to imagine the heat needed to make the rock strata so varied. Here and there the great needles of rock, perfect for nesting birds!

Again a really clear day seeing down to Strumble Head lighthouse and our walk of yesterday, Dinas Head a little closer luckily as we would finish around there later in the day. Jill had thought Dinas Head was whale shaped, and so it is. Would we see whales and dolphins today?

What we did see though were choughs! A family seemed to follow us today - or more likely it was a couple of families. So great to see them again!
As we had set off at Ceibwr Bay, we had seen a large bird much bigger than a kestrel hovering, perhaps a peregrine and certainly a merlin and Michael had spotted some gannets.

A customary sight today was Michael and Chris usually quite some distance ahead of Jill and me!

We didn't mind!

Whilst looking and hoping to see the mammal varieties in the sea (apart from seals......!), we did see some other fishers....

There they were floating along.....

And there they are nesting on sheer cliffs, guillemots! Hope you can see them justabout......

Now and then a rest and drink were really required. It really was so hot and not so breezy today either even on these cliffs! I earned the unfortunate nickname of "Sweaty Betty"! Thank you, Michael, though I admit, well deserved!

As we approached Newport, the inclines finally stopped.....or at least evened out...
Dinas Head was now much closer! And yes it does look like a whale, Jill. The only one we saw today sadly, although some seaweed earlier had us fooled for a while..

As Newport got closer, we could now also see the Preseli mountains. There was Carn Ingli behind Michael as we turned into Newport bay.

And the waving grass made a good foreground for Dinas Head!

And just look at the sky behind us!

There we were going down into the bay when Chris had one of his comedy falls! Luckily he wasn't injured badly and Jill is a nurse so we were in safe hands! Though we did laugh about it later!

And there suddenly were Newport Sands... we'd done it, though not in record time! It was a wonderful day with much fun and laughter and Magnums as the prize! What's more it's 7 and a half more miles!
